Do you know the White & Yellow lines are also the part of Road Signs ?

Some Roads have White or some have Yellow Marking, Why?

Today's most of the people don't care about road signs and traffic rules. For most of us Red, Yellow and Green lights are the main concern in traffic rules, No one care for other sign boards or road markings. Have you ever try to know about White and yellow lines on the roads ? 

The Road Safety is a prime concern in all over the world. Road accidents are increasing every year. So let's try to informed ourselves about those markings that might make our drive safe.

We all have noticed white and yellow lines on the roads. Sometimes they are solid and sometimes they are broken lines. These line are also a major part of road signs.

"White Lines painted on the pavement indicate traffic traveling in your direction and Yellow Lines mark the center of a two-way road used for two-way traffic".


One Solid Yellow Line:  
It means you can overtake other vehicles but can't pass the Solid Yellow line. This rule may vary from state to state. For example, a solid yellow line is intended for establishing no overtaking in Telangana.








Double Solid Yellow Line: 
Passing is not allowed over double solid line.









Broken Yellow Line: 
                 It means you can pass over the broken
 yellow line but with caution.






Solid and Broken Yellow Line together: 
If you are next to solid line, you are not allowed to overtake and cross the line, but if you are next to broken line you are allowed.







Solid White Line: 
It indicates that you must not change your 
lanes and stay in the lane you are already on. 
                            









Broken White Line: 
It means you are allowed to change the lane, 
if it is safe to do so.

Latest Innovations for Highway Safety

When drivers make judgmental error or mistake on highways, they meet with accident. These road crashes are increasing day by day just because of driver's less concentration specially during night time. All it takes is a split second to crash against a tree, a pole, any other road side object or fall off the road shoulder or cross over a median on a curve.

Here we are discussing about some solutions or equipment designed in such a way so that it can provide protection to the occupants of a vehicle in case the driver made a mistake. Lots of innovative products like Cable safety barriers, crash cushions and energy absorbing end terminals are now available that can make our highways more safe for the vehicle users. Some of these technologies are discussed below.




Cable Safety Barriers / Wire Rope Crash Barriers 


TRINITY CASS® A cable barrier, sometimes referred to as cable guard rail or wire rope safety barrier (WRSB), is a flexible type of roadside or median safety barrier that is more forgiving in nature than a metal beam or concrete barriers and therefore cause less damage and injuries to the vehicle occupants. The flexibility of the system absorbs impact energy and dissipates it laterally, which reduces the forces transmitted to the vehicle occupants and therefore making them less susceptible to injuries. 



Crash Cushions/ Impact Attenuators 



A crash with rigid object often leads to grievous injuries and even death of vehicle occupants. Gore areas, toll booths, start of elevated section, foundations of overhead gantry signs are some common examples of unavoidable rigid objects that are knowingly introduced on highways by designers. The vehicle users must be protected against these dangerous features on the highways.  USA are a good example of performance tested energy absorbing end treatments.                                      


Energy Absorbing End-terminals





Untreated ends of Metal beam guardrail pose a grave danger to road users and need effective treatment to ensure safety of vehicles and occupants during an impact. 

“Energy absorbing” end treatments that have been performance tested to conform to EN-1317-4, P4 performance class have been found to be the most appropriate and effective end treatments especially on important, high speed (>80 kmph), high traffic roads.

Gyratory Compactor

Superpave Gyratory Compactor is a completely self contained SGC that is ideal for on-site testing and mobile labs, this SGC can handle design and QC/QA work with equal ease. It measures the mold angle during compaction. This angle, along with the consolidation pressure, gyration number, and specimen height is displayed throughout the compaction process. Simply enter the compaction parameters, lower the prepared mold into the compaction chamber, secure the gyratory head, and press Start.
The system then applies the consolidation pressure, induces the angle, and gyrates the mold until the specified number of gyrations or specified height is reached. Extrude the specimen after compaction with the same hydraulic ram used to compact
the specimen.

Geogauge & Nuclear Density Gauge


GeoGauge: The GeoGauge is a unique, QC/QA field tool that can be used to measure the uniformity of unbound pavement layers by measuring the variability in stiffness throughout a structure. It is an excellent tool for identifying construction anomalies that would otherwise go undetected during construction where only density or percent compaction measurements were used. GeoGauge can be used to verify that the stiffness/ modulus values assumed in the design specifications of new or rehabilitated pavement structures are met.



This dynamic technology used by the GeoGauge simulates real in-use conditions. This factor allows the GeoGauge to directly measure in-place engineering properties during the construction process.

Nuclear Density Gauge (NDG): Moisture/Density Gauges use an advanced micro-processor- based technology to provide highly-accurate measurements of density and moisture that are automatically computed for direct readouts of wet density, dry density, moisture content, percent of moisture, percent of compaction (Proctor or Marshall), void ratio and air voids.  The NDG can be used to test the degree of compaction of practically any paving material such as soil, aggregate, asphalt, concrete, even flyash.

Digital, Static Cone Penetrometer (DSCP)

About Digital, Static Cone Penetrometer (DSCP) :




Humboldt’s Digital, Static Cone Penetrometer (DSCP), with its large, digital readout, makes testing and recording readings easy. This procedure is used to access the in place strength of undisturbed soil and/or compacted materials. The bearing capacity can be used to estimate in situ CBR (California Bearing Ratio), shear strength of strata and bearing capacity. By the use of this tool, correlation charts may be developed on local material to correlate to blow counts, unconfined, in-situ CBR and other measurements.


The DSCP is especially useful in evaluating shallow foundations and pavement sub-grades where fine-grained soils are being used.

Application: The GCTS Frozen Soil Triaxial System is designed to study the formation of gas hydrates within soil samples and to characterize the geo-mechanical properties and response of hydrate-laden soils and rocks found mainly within ocean sediments on the continental margins and embedded in regions of permafrost.

The system uses a computer-controlled metering valve and internal copper vaporization coil for the precise control of test temperatures. Also included is an efficient cooling/heating device that allows for temperature control between –30C and +150C without requiring external Liquid Nitrogen (LN2).
